Gospel for this Sunday

(Matthew 4:1-11)

Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert where the devil came to tempt
him. After fasting for forty days and nights Jesus was very hungry, and the
devil said to him, “If you are indeed the Son of God, turn the stones around you
into bread.”

In reply, Jesus repeated the words of Scripture which said, “People cannot survive on bread alone, but need every word spoken by God.”

Then the devil took Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem and together they stood on its highest point. “If you are the Son of God,” the devil said, “then throw yourself down to prove it, because Scripture tells us that God’s angels will protect you from harm.”

Again Jesus answered him with words from
Scripture: “It is not right to put God to the test.”

The devil did not give up easily, so he took Jesus to the top of a high mountain where he showed him the kingdoms of the world in all their glory. “If you worship me,” the devil said, “I will give all of these to you.”

Finally growing impatient, Jesus said “Devil, leave me alone! For Scripture tells us to worship God and serve only him.”

Finally the devil left Jesus, and angels appeared to take care of him.

Prayer for the first week of Lent:
Dear Jesus,
There will be times during Lent
When we might find it difficult
To keep our promises.
But if you are there to help us,
Then we will keep on trying.
Thank you for loving us.
