Sunday 7th December 2014

Second Sunday of Advent (48/14)

Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the coming of the Christ Child at Christmas.  In this spirit of preparation, there will be on the Sunday afternoons of Advent (December 7th, 14th and 21st)  a holy hour of silent Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at the Sacred Heart Altar of the Church from 3 pm to 4 pm followed by evening prayer to conclude by 4:30 pm. It will be an opportunity to seek some time of prayerful peace and quiet reflection in the presence of Our Lord away from the hustle and bustle of the run up to Christmas.  Whether you can come for the full period or just for a short time you will be warmly welcome.  "Let us ask ourselves this evening, adoring the Christ truly present in the Eucharist: do I let myself be transformed by Him?”   [Pope Francis in a homily]

Last year Crosscare distributed over 750 tonnes of food directly to individuals and families in need.  This year the demand has doubled and they expect to give out almost 1,200 tonnes of food.  In response to this growing need Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has asked that we appeal once again to your generosity in asking you to bring non-perishable food items, personal hygiene products and household cleaning products, to your Parish Church this weekend.  All donations will be collected by Crosscare.

Santa will be making time in his hectic schedule to visit Howth to-day.  He will light up the Christmas Tree outside the church and there will be the usual singing with Howth Gospel Choir, Parish TYS Students and the Howth Pipe Band.  Gather in the village this afternoon (Sunday, 7th December) at 4.45pm and let’s light up the Christmas spirit together!

Tomorrow - Monday (8th December) is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a Holy Day of Obligation.  Masses for the feast – 8.00am, 10.00am and 7 o’clock in the evening.

In preparation for the coming of our Saviour, we will have the usual pre-Christmas ‘Clean-up’ of our beautiful church.  Please join us on Saturday 13th December between 9.00 and 10.00am or 10.30am to 12.30pm.  If you find you can’t make it on Sat. 13th you are more than welcome to give a half hour of your time any day between now and Christmas.  Contact Barbara, Parish Office Tel. 01-839 7398.

Christmas Choir Rehearsal

Singers needed for Christmas Masses -  7.00pm Nativity (24th Dec) and 10.30am Christmas Day.  Meet Sun. 14th Dec. in church at 1.00pm for first rehearsal.

The Senior Citizens’ Christmas party will be held in the ABBEY TAVERN on Sunday 21st December at 1.00pm.  Individual invitations are not being sent out but ALL SENIOR CITIZENS IN HOWTH PARISH ARE WELCOME.  It is asked that only Senior Citizens resident in Howth attend.  Those who require transport are asked to leave their names in the Sacristy  Tel. 839 7398.  Any donation towards expenses will be gratefully accepted.

Please remember in your prayers SYLVIA DAVITT (Howth Hill Lodge Nursing Home) who died during the week.  We offer our sympathy to her family.  May she rest in peace.
