HOWTH PARISH TRANSITION YEAR PROGRAMME

40 Transition Year students from the local area have just completed a year long, once a month programme which aims to foster a spirit of self-awareness, personal responsibility and community involvement in our young people.

This year, the sixth year of the programme, saw a new group of students tackle issues such as personal, mental and spiritual health, building active community relationships and planning for their future careers.

The final session of the programme was held in Stella Maris convent on April 25th.  The students were presented with their Achievement Certificates by Fr. Brendan Houlihan, who has been a sponsor of the programme since its inception.  “The response, involvement and participation by students continues to exceed all our expectations, and augers well for greater community involvement in the future”, concluded Paul Fagan, Chairman, Howth Parish Youth Group.

“You shall be my Witnesses…”Parish Preparation for Confirmation Programme

The fourth session takes place on Tuesday 7th May in the Church at 7.30 p.m. (Please note change of venue).  As the big day approaches they explore the question – How can I be a witness?  They look at ways of displaying the fruits of the Spirit – Love, Kindness, Joy, Goodness, Peace, Gentleness, Patience, Self-control and Faithfulness – in their own lives.  They talk about the campaign to carry out Acts of Random Kindness set up in Ireland a few years ago.  They promise to try to do something kind once a week that would show they are followers of Jesus, this kind deed to be done by themselves, with Family or as a group. We are all challenged to find more opportunities to carry out ARK (Acts of Random Kindness).

HOWTH CHAMBER MUSIC

A violin Project has been launched in Scoil Mhuire, Howth’s Primary School.  35 violins have been purchased which have allowed 150 children from Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class to learn violin during school hours.  It is modelled on the project launched by Sr. Bernadette in Crumlin.  The objective is to be able to extend this project to all local schools as well as to adults in the local community.  The organising committee aim to do this through fundraising from concerts and other events.  A Howth Chamber Music Festival will take place in May with three concerts given by five classical musicians who will perform over the weekend 16th to 18th May 2013.  On Saturday 18th May, a concert will take place in the Church at 8.30 p.m.  The programme will included Mozart, Mendelssohn and Schumann.  Performers on the evening will include Mia Cooper (Violin), Philippe Graffin (Violin), Ruth Gibson (Viola), Amy Norrington (Cello) and Alasdair Beatson (Piano).  Tickets  - €15 are available to buy from Finola Young (Centra), or reserve tickets by telephone 089-403 1292 or e-mail howthchambermusic@gmail.com
