The greatest challenge facing the Howth Parish Youth Group today is to reach out to connect, to engage and to involve our youth.  To do this successfully we have had to learn to play on their pitch through mediums and themes which interest them in order to engage them proactively.  So stated Paul Fagan, Chairman, Howth Parish Youth Group at the Graduation Ceremony for TYS students held last week at the Stella Maris Retreat Centre, Howth.

It was with this challenge in mind that the Howth Parish Youth Group initiated The Transition Year (TYS) programme some seven years ago.  Today it has evolved into an established programme embracing both Howth and Sutton Parishes.

The programme is centred around two principle concepts: (1) personal growth and responsibility, and (2) community project involvement.

Our half day, once a month, group sessions focus on well tailored engagements around physical, dietary, spiritual and mental health issues, together with a devoted session to career guidance.  On the community project front, the students proactively engage in a Christmas Party and a Spring Bingo Night with the residents in the HSE managed Kilrock House, as well as being an active part of the carol singing at the annual lighting of the Howth Christmas Tree.

We are now reviewing our programme for next year (2014/15) so would all potential TYS students please take note as we have a limit of 35 students.

Ecumenical Bible Week  takes place in the week June 8th  to 15th starting on Pentecost Sunday.  This new initiative, involving all the main churches, is a different kind of celebration.  It is not a congress or an assembly but a series of events which will move around Dublin and the wider area.  With a highly ecumenical engagement, this new initiative has great potential for the coming together of Christians from all backgrounds around the Word of God which we all share.  The Ecumenical Bible Week is a direct fruit of the International Eucharistic Congress of 2012.  If it proves a success, it may well become an annual happening.  The churches and movements so far involved are: Scripture Union, the Evangelical Alliance, the Orthodox Church, the Church of Ireland, the Catholic Church, the Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church.  See for more information Or pick up a brochure in the church.
