THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD                                                                                                    (20/12)

A MESSAGE FROM ARCHBISHOP DIARMUID MARTIN

The Bishops of Ireland are deeply grateful for the donations given to the four National Collections which have been taken up since 2009 for the 50th International Eucharistic Congress.  Your support means that Ireland is able to extend a warm welcome to visitors to Dublin from Ireland as well as from all over the world for this very important event in the life of the Catholic Church in Ireland, which will take place from 10th to 17th June.

There are so many initiatives underway in parishes and communities throughout the Archdiocese of Dublin in preparation for this significant occasion, which has as its theme, The Eucharist - Communion with Christ and with one another.  I wish to express my appreciation for these initiatives.  The Congress can be for the Church in Ireland a moment of renewal and I would ask you all to keep the event in your prayers.  If you would like to offer further financial support to the Congress, please give your donation to your local priest.  Your generosity is deeply appreciated and it is the intention to publish the full financial details of the Congress in due course.

POPE APPOINTS PAPAL LEGATE TO IEC 2012

Pope Benedict has appointed the Canadian born Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops at the Vatican Cardinal Marc Ouellet to be Papal Legate to the Eucharistic Congress in Dublin from June 10th to 17th.  As Papal Envoy Cardinal Ouellet will preside at various Congress events including the opening and the closing ceremonies.  A former Archbishop of Quebec City, Cardinal Ouellet is fluent in both French and English and has a working knowledge of a number of other languages. At different times of his life, has lived and worked in such diverse places as Colombia, Austria, Germany and Italy.  As a priest he spent many years as a professor of theology involved in the formation of priests.  As Archbishop of Quebec he played a leading role in the 2008 Eucharistic Congress held in that city.  He was brought to Rome by Pope Benedict in 2010.  In addition to being Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops he is a member of six other Vatican Congregations.  Commenting on the appointment of Cardinal Ouellet, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin said:  “As Archbishop of Quebec, he had to face a very similar social and pastoral context to that which we have in Dublin, where traditional Catholicism was challenged by a rapid secularisation.  He was a strong voice for the Church in that changing situation.  The Quebec Eucharistic Congress, though low key, impacted on Church and society, fostering unity of purpose and renewing evangelisation”.
