ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME                                                                                     (24/12)

International Eucharistic Congress 2012

Statio Orbis to conclude Congress today

For those attending the IEC 2012 at the RDS, it has been a week of many parts and surprises. There have been stimulating talks and workshops; there have been open air Masses with inspiring liturgies and wonderful singing; there has been prayer, Eucharistic Adoration and the Sacrament of Reconciliation; there has been colour, good humour and much joy.  Such have been the numbers attending that many were unable to get into the talks or workshops of their choice.  Overall, there has been tangible sense of the universal Church being alive and visible in Dublin this week.  The sight of enthusiastic young people from around the world including many young priests and religious has been a witness to the continuing vitality of the Church.  Notable too was the witness and charisms of the many lay movements that are contributing more and more to renewal, mission and communion in the Church.  Hundreds of volunteer stewards made everyone feel so welcome. However lest anyone forget the dark shadows, a simple granite memorial to the victims of child sexual abuse by priests and religious placed adjacent to the high altar in the main enclosure was a constant reminder that was underscored by the penitential pilgrimage of the Papal Legate and the Papal Nuntio to St. Patrick's Purgatory, Lough Derg made during the week at the request of Pope Benedict.

With an 'Ireland's eye' to the local, the Howth peninsula was well represented by the beautiful voice of Sharon Lyons, soloist at some of the liturgies and by Professor Vincent McBrierty's stimulating workshop address (with Fr. Gerry O'Hanlon SJ) on Thursday entitled "The World in crisis; the response of the Church".  Another speaker with a peninsula connection was Fr. Ciaran O'Carroll former curate in Sutton and now Rector of the Irish College in Rome and a papal chaplain.  His topic was how the model of living the Eucharist in Ireland has changed over the centuries.

Today the Congress concludes with the Statio Orbis in Croke Park that begins at 1:00 pm.  If you are going, make sure to get there in good time as a full stadium is expected.  Number 31 bus offers the best option with departures from Howth Summit at 08:30, 09:00, 09:30, 10:00, 10:30;11:30 and 12:00 (CAUTION: There is no bus at 11:00).  Check times of buses at . A second option is to go by DART to Connolly with departures from Howth at 09:35; 10:05; 10:50; 11:35;12:05.  Check train times at

New Prosper Fingal Support Service now open in Howth.

Prosper Fingal have been providing support for individuals with intellectual disability and their families in the Fingal area since 1978.  We are delighted to announce that our new support service is now open in Howth and we are proud to be new members of the Howth/Sutton/Baldoyle Chamber of Commerce.  Located at 1 Emo House, Main Street, Howth, this new service aims to support individuals with intellectual disabilities who live in the Howth/Sutton/Baldoyle area in becoming actively participating citizens by connecting them to their local community.

We have received a warm welcome in the area and those we support are increasingly contributing to and accessing their own community.  This service relies on the continued support of local businesses and community groups.  If you feel that you can support us in any way by offering volunteering opportunities or work experience, or if you run a business, club or group which you feel could benefit from increased membership please contact either Ashling O’Brien at 0871953489, or Laura Creaner at 0871953970,, or pop into our base in Howth for a chat.
