HOWTH-SUTTON TRANSITION YEAR STUDENTS LEAD THE WAY

The Howth Parish Youth Group initiated a Transition Year Student (TYS) Programme eight years ago which has evolved into an established feature embracing both the Howth and Sutton Parishes.  The Programme, sponsored by the Church of the Assumption, Howth, is centred on two principle concepts: (1) Youth Leadership in personal growth and responsibility, and (2) Youth Leadership in community project involvement.  The half day, once a month, group sessions focus on well tailored engagements around physical, dietary, spiritual and mental health issues, together with devoted sessions on creative thinking and career guidance.  On the community project front, the students proactively engage in the annual Christmas Party and Spring Bingo Night with the residents in the HSE managed Kilrock House, Howth, as well as being an active part of the carol singing at the annual lighting of the Howth Christmas Tree.

35 students drawn from five secondary schools participated in the Programme this year with the full and confident support of their school TYS coordinators.  The monthly group sessions took place in the school hall of Scoil Mhuire, Howth with the kind permission and cooperation of the Board of Management and the Principal, Mr. John Chambers.  Volunteers are most welcome to join the Howth Parish Youth Group to sustain and grow this Programme.  Contact Barbara in the Parish Office.  Tel. 839 7398.
